The book that I have been reading independently is Divergent. The real life issues that are reflected in this are when Tris has to become a part of a new society and leave her family's town. She has to become a part of the Dauntless society which makes her have to learn to be much more brave. She has to learn to overcome her fears. These relate to many real life issues when you have to try something new. Tris has to do many things like learn to throw knives and learn to fight but these skills come in handy very much later on in the book.
I would compare Tris to Katniss from The Hunger Games. They are both teenage girls who are trying to change the overpowering world they were born into. Katniss helps to start a revolution of the districts while in Tris's world, there are 5 sectors that people live in but not a overbearing Capitol. The people of her old home made up most of the government and a different sector is about to declare war on them to take over. Tris realizes this and sees that she needs to try and use her new skills to stop the massacre about to happen on her parent's home. Katniss also needs to try and protect her family from the War on the capital. These two characters are actually very similar in the way they act and how they try to change their world.
Who else do you think Tris and Katniss would be similar to?
I can not say for sure who I would compare them too because I still have not read either of those books. But from what it sounds like in your description, they would both be like Jonas from The Giver. All three of these protagonists have to give up something in order to protect someone they love.
