My Summer Reading Book

The book I read for my summer reading project was titled City of Thieves by David Benioff. This book takes place in Russia during World War II. The Germans are attacking Lev's home town of Piter. The town is in a very harsh time with their food running out and being rationed and Lev gets caught and thrown in jail for looting. Him and his cellmate, Kolya, are given a chance to save their lives when the Colonel sends them on a mission to find a dozen eggs to be used in his daughter's wedding cake during this very tough time. They have to travel out behind enemy lines to find the eggs and eventually even have to talk to German leaders in order to get the eggs.

Lev is a young teenage boy who is shy and Kolya is a former soldier who is very chatty and tries to help Lev come out of his shell. Kolya helps Lev learn alot about growing up and is very funny about it also. I think the author wrote this book to entertain young boys also and to let them read a funny story that also helps them learn about growing up. Afte Kolya dies when he gets shot in the butt by a Russian soldier who mistook him for a German, Lev has to learn to make it home by himself. He eventually finds a girlfriend who he had met through Kolya. They finally made it back home and Lev had changed from a young confused teenager to a new man. He had grown up and learned alot from Kolya. This book was also very humorous when talking about growing up which is why I liked it because I am in a similar situatuion as Lev with growing up and going through high school.

  1. Since WWII is one of my favorite occurances in history, would you recommend this book? Is it based off of any factual evidence?
